The Summer Night Market in Mellieha on 14 August 982. Kentish Plover WADERS (or shorebirds) generally have long legs for walking about in shallow water along the shore probing the wet mud for worms and things with their long bills. By wader standards, the sparrow-sized Kentish plover's appendages are on the short side. Like most shore- birds its colours are a subdued mix of whites, greys and browns, so it's easily mistaken for a pebble or chunk of mud when standing still. The Kentish plover (M. monakella żgħira) is a rather scarce annual visitor to our shores, and the best chance of spotting one is places like Salina nature reserve. These birds would love nothing better than to chase the waterline on a sandy beach but of course our sum- mer beaches are way too packed with humans for their liking. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 10 AUGUST 2025 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (photo)
