The Summer Night Market in Mellieha on 14 August 983. Damselfish THE damselfish is one of our most common shallow-water fish. It is gregarious so you almost always see shoals of them, sometimes numbering thousands. They love to hang around a metre or two below the surface in open water, moving about in an irregular kind of invisible column, intermittently shooting out their extendable mouth – a split-second action – to gobble plankton. Damselfish (M. ċawla) start out life as bright neon blue fry, which they (alas!) lose as they grow to dark brown adulthood, hence their Maltese name. Damselfish are not particularly afraid of people, and will let you approach and practically accept you in their circle. To float awhile weightless amidst this silent mass of life is almost a religious expe- rience. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 17 AUGUST 2025 ALMANAC Text: Victor Falzon - Photo: Desirée Falzon
