6 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 22 AUGUST 2025 CULTURE THE Asian cockroach (Blattella asahinai) has been found in Gozo, ac- cording to a new study that also identified the Tawny cockroach (Ecto- bius pallidus) as another species newly recorded on the island. The research, titled On the origin of cockroaches of the Maltese islands and led by Maltese entomolo- gist and pest expert Ar- nold Sciberras, examined the history and spread of cockroach populations through fossil records, historical accounts, and modern infestations. The Asian cockroach poses concerns for pest control in Gozo. Unlike the German cockroach, which it closely resem- bles, it is a strong flier and is attracted to light, often entering homes. The Tawny cockroach was found in March 2025 in Pembroke Malta and August 2025 the first time in nadur gozo .
