Architecture & Design | 31 INSIDE THE CURATED GLOW OF AMBER TERRACE ESS LTD Tel: +356 2125 5777 Website: ess.com.mt O ffering a stylish escape from the vibrant energy of the SuperBowl, located at The Eden, the Amber Terrace bar introduces a refined, laid-back experience where guests can enjoy curated cocktails and premium bar bites in a lush, calming environment. Led by Carlo Schembri &bold., the design draws on natural elements such as plants and open-air flow, set against a monochromatic palette of black, white and nuanced greys. Within this framework, lighting became the central narrative device, not simply for illumination but for shaping the mood and atmosphere of the space. True to its name, the bar is immersed in the soft amber glow of a summer sunset, a deliberate choice that defines its intimate and welcoming character. To realise this vision, the client opted for ESS, one of Malta's leading suppliers of architectural lighting solutions. Inspired by Olafur Eliasson's explorations in filtered light, the design shifts focus away from pure colour and toward the interplay of light, texture and form. ESS was tasked with turning the concept into a bespoke solution. Drawing on its expertise and access to advanced technologies, ESS delivered a custom modular LED system: a flexible, concealed source of light housed within a silicone tube to provide 360° distribution. This allowed the system to be shaped into the soft, biomorphic forms central to the Amber Terrace design. Suspended at varying heights, these continuous lines of light trace a non-linear path across the ceiling, creating a dynamic sense of depth. The glowing contours accentuate the ceiling's texture, transforming light into an architectural tool. At the heart of the venue, the system takes on a new expression. Here, the fluid light lines reconfigure into a sculptural centrepiece above the circular bar, intertwining to form a playful yet dramatic focal point. The Amber Terrace is a study in light's transformative power, demonstrating how a strong design vision combined with technical expertise can reshape an environment. ESS is proud to have delivered the lighting solution for this project, reaffirming its commitment to providing high- quality, innovative lighting to Malta's hospitality sector. With more than two decades of experience, ESS continues to help clients bring their most ambitious visions to life.
