2 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 7 SEPTEMBER 2025 NEWS Nationalists choose youth over experience: Alex Borg becomes the Nationalist Party's new leader after winning with 50.6% of the vote ALEX Borg early on Sunday declared victory over rival Adrian Delia in the Nationalist Party leadership election. According to sources from inside the counting hall, Borg won by just 1.1% of the vote. The figure, nor Borg's victory, could not be inde- pendently verified by the party, by time of print. Borg, the youngest candidate to contest the leadership in recent years, won the support of party members in a vote closely watched by both supporters and political ob- servers. He will the PN's tenth leader. Borg's election marks a generation- al shift within the PN, whose mem- bers opted for a younger face to lead the party after former leader Bernard Grech stepped down. Grech resigned from the post last June following a MaltaToday survey which showed a vote gap of 39,000 votes between the PN and the PL. The contest was a two-way race be- tween Borg and former leader Adri- an Delia, who sought a return to the post after his ousting in 2020. Borg now takes charge of the par- ty at a critical moment, with the challenge of uniting members and strengthening the PN's position na- tionally as the general election edges closer. PN election A total of 17,862 PN members cast their vote in the election for a leader of the party between Alex Borg and Adrian Delia. The total number of eligible voters amounted to around 20,700. Turn out for the election stood at 85.9% Both Adrian Delia and Alex Borg cast their votes on Saturday morn- ing. All photos by James Bianchi/MaltaToday
