Egyptian Vulture WE usually associate vultures with grisly African scenes of these large, ungainly birds scavenging a dead zebra. But Europe too has its vultures: four species, and all quite rare. They are pretty sedentary birds, staying in their area all their life – except the Egyptian vulture (M. avultun ab- jad), smallest of the four, which regularly migrates. This week a young bird on its first migration to Africa turned up here. It was a captive-bred bird from a breeding centre in Italy, released to start life in the wild. For three days, BirdLife Malta, rangers and the police followed and monitored the satellite-tagged bird (pictured) round the clock. Thanks to this vigil it wasn't shot down and safely resumed its trip south. A declining species, the Egyptian vulture is so called because it featured much in ancient Egyptian culture, religion, writing and art. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 7 SEPTEMBER 2025 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (photo)
