The announcement was made during a press event held today at Villa Bighi, where the Gov- ernment of Malta confirmed that the historic fort has been officially transferred to Xjenza Malta for redevelopment. Originally a closed military in- stallation, Fort Binġemma will now serve as a hub for research, public education, and scientific outreach. Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici, who addressed the event, described the project as a way of turning Malta's his- torical identity into a platform for innovation and learning. He emphasised that cultural herit- age should not remain static but continue to contribute to na- tional progress. "This project shows how our cultural heritage can continue to serve the nation—not only by preserving history, but by inspir- ing future generations through science and education," he said. In the absence of the Parlia- mentary Secretary for Youth, Research and Innovation Keith Azzopardi Tanti, the Chief Ex- ecutive of Xjenza Malta, Silvio Scerri, spoke on behalf of the or- ganisation. He described Space Park Malta as a deliberate step toward putting Malta's heritage to work for the public good, cre- ating a space where science, ed- ucation and families can inter- sect. He added that the initiative aligns closely with Malta Vision 2050, the government's long- term strategy for building a resil- ient and competitive economy. The new park will include an Earth Observation Centre that uses satellite data to support maritime security, land use anal- ysis, and environmental moni- toring. A Research Observatory and a Public Observatory will offer both professionals and the general public access to the skies through guided learning and hands-on astronomy expe- riences. At the heart of the park will be Esplora Space, a science engagement centre that will host exhibitions, school programmes, and outreach activities. In addition to its scientific facil- ities, the project will also feature a public library, spaces for digital and traditional media creation, and collaborative learning areas. These will support innovation and entrepreneurship, particu- larly within the space sector, with infrastructure dedicated to nurturing start-ups and fos- tering a new knowledge-based economy. Sustainability is a key part of the park's design. The redevel- opment will incorporate solar energy systems, intelligent ener- gy management, rainwater har- vesting, and landscaped public gardens featuring indigenous plant species. Lighting will be designed to preserve Malta's night skies, supporting both eco- logical balance and astronomical observation. Government officials stated that the transformation of Fort Binġemma is not only a commit- ment to protecting national her- itage, but also a forward-looking investment in Malta's future.
