30 | Architecture & Design F ounded in 1791, Girard-Perregaux stands among the rare watchmaking houses that trace their heritage to the 18th century while remaining fully independent—a distinction that defines both its philosophy and its creative freedom. Independence, according to the brand, is more than a structural detail; it is a mindset. "Being an independent brand gives us the possibility to be free in terms of strategy and product choice, allowing us to pursue our tradition while always looking ahead," says Lisa Parolini, Brand Manager of Girard-Perregaux. At the heart of Girard-Perregaux's identity is its mastery of mechanical art. The Bridges Collection, for instance, exemplifies the brand's pioneering spirit, originating from the 19th-century vision of Constantin Girard. His approach was radical: exposing the normally hidden components of a watch to reveal the mechanical beauty within. The skeletonization of the bridges, crafted in gold and polished by hand, makes visible the invisible, marrying technical precision with architectural elegance. Each bridge undergoes five different finishes over 40 hours, a testament to the Maison's meticulous devotion to métier d'art. Modern iterations continue this philosophy, drawing inspiration from contemporary architecture while maintaining the original mechanical integrity. Parolini notes, "Our bridges are inspired by modern architecture: strong, visible, yet elegant. It's about making the invisible visible, just like in great architectural design." Equally iconic is the Laureato Collection, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Emerging in the 1970s as a "sport-chic" watch, Laureato was designed entirely in-house, integrating its bracelet seamlessly with the case, a design choice that mirrors architectural attention to proportion, form, and functionality. Its geometric facets, bold lines, and harmonious integration of materials showcase how watchmaking can echo architectural principles, turning a timepiece into a wearable structure. The brand's commitment extends to highly technical creations, such as the Grand Complication series, where each tourbillon movement is assembled entirely by a single master watchmaker. With up to 79 components in just the tourbillon cage, the work exemplifies the brand's dedication to precision, artistry, and the intimate connection between human ingenuity and mechanical design. Girard-Perregaux also engages contemporary audiences with projects like the Deep Diver Legacy Edition, where vintage inspirations are reinterpreted through modern materials, technical innovations, and collaborations with designers like George Bamford. These timepieces bridge past and present, demonstrating how design, functionality, and aesthetic storytelling can coexist harmoniously. As Parolini emphasises, "For us, every creation is a dialogue between history, innovation, and craftsmanship. It's about making the invisible visible while remaining true to our DNA." Girard-Perregaux is more than a watchmaker; it is a design atelier that translates centuries of mechanical knowledge into objects that resonate as both technical marvels and architectural statements.
