The proposal to pedestrianise Triq Kalċidon Agius was made by developer Emmanuel Farru- gia. The road is currently closed due to ongoing works. Farrugia already has a permit to build a commercial com- plex consisting of five shops and 28 overlying apartments in the area. This application fol- lowed a zoning request by the same developer that increased the developable area by chang- ing the building alignment—a move previously opposed by the council. Now, the developer is asking for the short road to be closed off to cars, a proposal support- ed by Naxxar Mayor Chris De- guara. Deguara described the propos- al as an opportunity to improve safety for people using the play- ing field, while creating a space for cultural and social activities. KARL AZZOPARDI kazzopardi@mediatoday.com.mt BIRKIRKARA FC has confirmed it narrowly avoided falling vic- tim to an elaborate international football scam after receiving what appeared to be a record transfer offer for one of its Maltese inter- national players. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the club said the pro- posal had been made by an indi- vidual falsely impersonating the sporting director of a German sec- ond-division side. The player was also contacted directly and pre- sented with terms that "seemed difficult to refuse," according to the club.
