6 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 24 DECEMBER 2025 NEWS A recently established Gozo- based tree-planting e-NGO, Sigar has closed its 2025 planting sea- son with the planting of its 36th tree, a lemon tree at Gozo College Dun Salv Vella Nadur Primary School. The final planting of the year was carried out with the partici- pation of volunteers, students and teachers, in collaboration with Nadur Local Council, represented by Ivan from the council. The in- itiative forms part of Sigar's wider mission to promote the planting of locally grown, indigenous trees and shrubs across Gozo. Throughout the current plant- ing season, Sigar's volunteer "tree champions" have led a series of hands-on planting sessions at schools and community sites, working closely with local coun- cils and educational institutions. These activities aim not only to increase green spaces but also to foster environmental awareness among younger generations. In addition to trees, Sigar has also focused on the planting of in- digenous shrubs. A further plant- ing session involving shrubs is scheduled to take place in Nadur, continuing the NGO's seasonal work. Sigar has confirmed that all trees planted are regularly watered to ensure their survival and long- term growth. The organisation has also announced that a number of additional tree-plant- ing projects are already planned for 2026, signalling an expansion of its activities across the island. Thanking volunteers, educators and local councils for their sup- port, Sigar marked the end of the season by extending festive wish- es to the community. "Merry Christmas.
