Nature Notebook Eat For Impact: Take a Bite out of Climate Change! Eat for Impact comes to Mal- ta this February, bringing cli- mate-friendly food to the fore- front of local dining. Part of a global initiative by Planted So- ciety and coordinated locally by Friends of the Earth Malta, the month-long campaign invites res- taurants across the island to serve specially created plant-based dishes that reduce environmental impact without compromising on flavour. Seven local restaurants are tak- ing part, proving that sustainable food choices can be creative, ac- cessible, and delicious. At the end of the campaign, a climate impact report will highlight the real dif- ference these meals have made, showing how everyday food choices can support a healthier planet. Participating restaurants: • Palazzo Castelletti, Rabat • The Harbour Club, Valletta • Ġenna ta' L-Art, Dingli • Heirloom Streatery, Qormi • Vincent Eco Estate, Mġarr • Pink Garlic Malta, San Pawl il-Baħar • The Flying Saucer, Birkirkara Green idea of the week 1004 Don't miss this Give nature a voice. Friar's Cowl WINTER is not the best season for flowers – those usually wait for spring – but it sure is the season for vigorous growth, especial- ly after a plentiful supply of rain like we're having. That's why our countryside is such a pleasant swathe of green right now. Some plants do flower in winter, however, and one of these is the friar's cowl (M. garni tal-pipa). The friar's cowl grows low on the ground in well-watered, sheltered spots, though not at all averse to sun- light. It is a common species, often forming carpets of glossy bright green, arrow-shaped, almost plastic-like foliage. The flower is very far from the daisy design we associate with the concept "flower". It's this strange hooded tube, striped purply-brown and white, and looking a bit like a miniature upside-down saxophone... with a long protruding tongue! This eldritch structure is of course what gave rise to this plant's weird names. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 25 JANUARY 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon Find out more about this initiative here: https://foemalta.org/event/eat-for- impact-take-a-bite-out-of-climate-change/
