Nature Notebook Eat For Impact: Take a Bite out of Climate Change! Eat for Impact comes to Mal- ta this February, bringing cli- mate-friendly food to the fore- front of local dining. Part of a global initiative by Planted So- ciety and coordinated locally by Friends of the Earth Malta, the month-long campaign invites res- taurants across the island to serve specially created plant-based dishes that reduce environmental impact without compromising on flavour. Seven local restaurants are tak- ing part, proving that sustainable food choices can be creative, ac- cessible, and delicious. At the end of the campaign, a climate impact report will highlight the real dif- ference these meals have made, showing how everyday food choices can support a healthier planet. Participating restaurants: • Palazzo Castelletti, Rabat • The Harbour Club, Valletta • Ġenna ta' L-Art, Dingli • Heirloom Streatery, Qormi • Vincent Eco Estate, Mġarr • Pink Garlic Malta, San Pawl il-Baħar • The Flying Saucer, Birkirkara Green idea of the week 1004 Don't miss this Give nature a voice. Walter Micallef's iconic melodies and poetic lyrics, which have shaped the Maltese music landscape for decades, are re-imagined by a new wave of Maltese-language artists. These fresh interpretations honour the soul of the originals while offering bold, contemporary perspectives. Adding to the magic, Walter Micallef himself will perform a selection of rare and lesser-known works, alongside previously unreleased songs, offering audiences a unique glimpse into both his past and his ongoing creative journey. Tennija is more than a concert — it is a heartfelt celebration of heritage, reinvention, and artistic continuity. Rythms of Vision Date: 22 Febuary Location: Malta Society of Arts, Valletta, Malta This programme showcases 32 years of chamber music by composer Zahra, tracing the evolution of a bold and unmistakable musical voice. At its core are three compelling piano and clarinet duos: Mouse in the Machine (1992), Boiling Clouds (2018), and Catch My Breath (2023). The earliest work draws inspiration from Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, while the later compositions reveal Zahra's distinctive contemporary style — marked by rhythmic clusters, pulsating grooves, and raw, aggressive textures. The programme also features a series of interdisciplinary works for piano and video, reflecting Zahra's long-standing exploration of visual narrative in music. Since 2007, he has developed an aesthetic that fuses live performance with videography, creating immersive sound-and-image experiences where the video's sound design becomes an integral part of the music. 1006. Western water rail RAILS and crakes are a widespread group of birds but many of them are secretive and often overlooked. Of the 10 or so species recorded in Malta, most are small, shy or cryptically coloured – or all three. To make the game even harder, their favourite haunts are marshy places with reedy undergrowth. One such bird is the water rail (M. gallozz tax-xitwa). It's a regular migrant, arriving in autumn and spending winter snooping around reedbeds and tangled vegetation along valley floors, stabbing its long red beak at anything that looks edible. Like other rails it's hard to spot but its 'squealy-pig' call often gives away its presence. That call is a familiar winter sound at sites like Għadira and Is-Simar nature reserves, where rails can forage in relative safety. In unprotected places, water rails can be legal- ly blown to bits by gun-wielding men in silly camouflage (officially until yesterday, 31 January being the last day of the hunting season, but you know…) 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 1 FEBRUARY 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Aron Tanti (Photo) Find out more about this initiative here: https://foemalta.org/event/eat-for- impact-take-a-bite-out-of-climate-change/
