ensuring that restoration works
progress steadily while allowing
sufficient time for careful execution.
Speaking about the significance of the
scheme, Planning Authority Executive
Chairperson Johann Buttigieg said:
"With this scheme, we are once
again reaffirming our commitment
to protecting the architectural
heritage and identity of Maltese and
Gozitan villages, strengthening our
communities for future generations
and ensuring that this initiative
delivers the results we aspire to
achieve.
It is particularly satisfying that
the scheme applies not only to
private residences but also to
buildings housing non-governmental
organisations, which play a crucial role
at the heart of our communities."
Irrestawra Darek 2026 builds
on decades of investment in
conservation. Over the past 30 years,
more than €33 million has already
been distributed through similar
schemes, with over 4,000 applications
submitted since 2017 alone. This new
programme significantly accelerates
that commitment, channelling a
further €30 million in just half a
year. Open to private residences,
commercial buildings, NGOs and
churches within Urban Conservation
Areas, the scheme recognises
that heritage is not confined to
monuments alone, but lives within
the everyday spaces that bring
communities together.
