8 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 13 MARCH 2026 CULTURE MORE than 90 religious, cultural and community ac- tivities will take place across Gozo as part of the "Easter in Gozo" programme running from March 6 to April 5, 2026. The programme, launched by Clint Camilleri, Malta's Minister for Gozo and Plan- ning, brings together events held in several villages show- casing the island's Easter tra- ditions. Activities planned during the period include religious celebrations, cultural events and community initiatives spread across different local- ities, reflecting customs that are deeply rooted in Gozitan society. Speaking during the launch, the minister said the pro- gramme forms part of efforts to strengthen Gozo's position as a year-round destination, encouraging both local and international visitors to spend time on the island during the Easter period. He added that the initiative also aligns with the govern- ment's broader development strategy for Gozo and the Mal- ta Vision 2050, which aims to promote tourism throughout the year. Easter is considered one of the most significant periods in Gozo's religious calendar. Villages across the island organise Good Friday pro- cessions and dramatic rep- resentations of the Passion, traditions that have been pre- served for generations and are largely organised by volun- teers and local communities. Celebrations culminate on Easter Sunday, when church bells ring and villages hold traditional processions with the Risen Christ. Camilleri encouraged the public to experience what he described as a unique combi- nation of devotion, heritage and community spirit that characterises Easter celebra- tions in Gozo.
