1. What's been the most defining mo- ment in your career so far? One of the most defining aspects of my career has been the variety of experi- ences I have had from such a young age. Representing Malta abroad in singing competitions shaped me not only as a performer but also as a person. Be- ing exposed to different cultures and meeting artists from around the world strengthened my belief that music truly is a universal language. Every milestone holds a special place in my heart. Placing second at the Malta Junior Eurovision Song Contest was unforgettable, as it was my first major experience performing as part of a group. Although I had previously taken part in festivals like Sanremo Junior Malta, performing in front of such a large audience at that age left a strong impression on me. I have always loved performing with a live orchestra, which is why festivals like Ghanja tal Poplu mean so much to me. Winning the Best Radio Song award in 2025 made that experience even more special. However, Muzika Muzika 2023 remains closest to my heart. Performing with Kwinti required unity, compromise, and trust. Seeing all our hard work come together on that stage, with a live or- chestra and one of the largest television audiences in Malta, was truly unforget- table and continues to inspire me to keep aiming higher. 2. As a creative, how do you navigate the world and speed of social media? I navigate social media quite comfort- ably because I have grown up with it. I have always loved documenting moments from my daily life, even from the early days of Instagram. For me, it is not only about exposure but also about keeping memories. At the same time, it plays an important role in my music journey. I use it inten- tionally, following artists who inspire me and keeping up with what is happening in the industry. I see it as a supportive tool rather than something overwhelm- ing. I try to stay updated with trends, but I do not feel pressured to follow everything, especially when I have a busy schedule. When I am working on a project, how- ever, I make sure to keep my platforms active. I enjoy sharing rehearsal clips, studio sessions, and behind the scenes moments, because people often do not realise how much preparation goes into each performance. Looking back at these memories reminds me how everything felt in the moment. It keeps me grounded and grateful for every opportunity I experience through music. 3. Do you consider artificial intelligence a threat to your career, or an opportu- nity? I see artificial intelligence as both an opportunity and a responsibility. It really depends on how it is used. As a pianist, the piano is my main instrument and my favourite way of expressing myself. However, there are moments when digital tools or AI can help creatively. For example, if I want to experiment by adding other instruments to a video, it can support that idea. In that sense, I see it as a creative aid rath- er than a replacement. Where I draw the line is in professional and competitive spaces. When music that is heavily generated by AI is pre- sented as fully human made in festivals or competitions, it risks taking away from the authenticity and effort behind real artistry. So I do not see AI as a threat, but I believe it must be used with integrity. When treated as a tool rather than a substitute, it can support creativity with- out replacing the human element that makes music special. 4. How do you stay motivated and in- spired, especially during tough times? I stay motivated by reminding myself why I started singing in the first place. Music has always been my way of expressing myself, and it is something I have loved since childhood. When things feel difficult, I try to reconnect with that feeling of joy rather than focusing on pressure. I also find motivation in the experienc- es I have lived. Muzika Muzika 2023 was intense and busy, but it was also incredibly fulfilling. When I look back at that performance, I can see how happy I was on stage. Remembering that feeling reminds me why the hard work is worth it. The industry can be challenging, but I try not to compare myself to others. Instead, I focus on becoming better than my previous performance. That mindset helps me stay grounded, motivated, and excited to keep growing. 5. How do you balance your creative instincts with expectations? Balancing my creative instincts with expectations starts with being open minded. I genuinely enjoy exploring dif- ferent musical styles, whether emotional ballads or more upbeat songs. It helps me grow and keeps my creativity fresh. At the same time, I always make sure that whatever I do still feels authentic to who I am as an artist. When collaborating, communication is very important. I respect the vision of composers and producers, but I also share my thoughts honestly. Finding that balance allows us to create some- thing that represents everyone involved. By staying true to myself while remain- ing adaptable, I am able to create work that feels genuine and meaningful. 6. How do you approach a new project? My approach depends on the type of project, whether it is a competition, a live performance, or a collaboration. However, I believe every opportunity deserves the same level of commitment and respect. For original songs, I usually begin by discussing the theme and style to make sure there is a clear direction. Once the song is written, we refine it together. I always interpret it as the composer intends first, and then gradually add my personal touch as I grow more confident with it. During recordings, I am very focused on vocal delivery and details. Preparation is essential, including rehearsals and vocal training. I also value honest feedback from people I trust. I enjoy documenting rehearsals and behind the scenes moments, because looking back at them reminds me of the dedication behind every project and how much I continue to grow. 7. Can you let us in on some of the future projects and works? I prefer not to reveal too much just yet, but I can say that I am always working on new material and exploring different ideas. I am collaborating with various people on different projects, which al- lows me to experiment with new sounds while continuing to grow as an artist. Some projects are still in early stages, while others are closer to being shared. What I can promise is that everything I work on reflects who I am and the direc- tion I want to keep developing. I am excited for what is ahead and look forward to sharing it at the right time. maltatoday | SUNDAY • 29 MARCH 2026 Theatre Adrian Buckle to launch A Darkness Over Rashford at Spazju Kreattiv ARTS • TV • WHAT'S ON BY LAURA CALLEJA suggestions by email lcalleja@mediatoday.com.mt The Q & A KAYLEY CUSCHIERI 7 questions for... Extra round What does music mean to you on a personal level? Music is my main form of expression. It is how I communicate emotions that I may not always put into words. Whether I am on stage or simply singing during my daily routine, it is something that feels natural to me. Playing the piano especially gives me clarity and helps me reset my thoughts. Music is not only something I turn to during difficult times. It is also how I celebrate happiness and special moments. It gives me energy while keeping me grounded. It is not just a career for me. It is an essential part of who I am. Kayley Cuschieri is a Maltese singer and educator who has represented Malta internationally and built a strong presence on the local music scene.
