Common nightingale I'M sure we have all heard about the nightingale's famous song, the proverbial birdsong that has inspired poets and composers; we probably all read Andersen's heartbreaking tale too. But how many of us here have actually heard a nightingale 'in concert'? Yes, too few unfortunately. It's not that we don't get the bird: nightingales (M. rożinjol) are long-distance travellers and many will be stopping here for a short kip and snack at this time of year as they wing their way north to nest in European woodlands.
