7 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 1 APRIL 2026 CULTURE Vertigo exhibition by Hui Sun to open at Malta Society of Arts this May A new solo exhibition by Chi- nese-born artist Hui Sun will open at the Malta Society of Arts from May 28 to June 25, 2026, presenting his latest body of work under the title Vertigo. The exhibition marks Hui's most recent showing in Mal- ta, where he is now based, and continues his exploration of psychological tension and spa- tial complexity developed in his ongoing Silent Space series. The works combine multiple themes within single compositions, jux- taposing emotional contrasts such as restlessness and warmth. Born in Datong, in China's Shanxi province, Hui trained at Yunnan Art University, where he completed a master's degree in 2012. His graduation work, History Wheel-I, was acquired by the university's art museum. He later taught at the institution for nearly a decade, from 2012 to 2021. Throughout his career in Chi- na, Hui participated in several national exhibitions, including the "Excavation and Discovery of Oil Painting New Artists" se- ries in Beijing, as well as group shows in Kunming and Nan- ning. He received third prize at the Yunnan Young Artists Exhi- bition in 2012 and again at the Third Yunnan Oil Painting So- ciety Art Exhibition in 2020. Since relocating to Malta, Hui has continued to exhibit locally, including shows at the Cittadel- la Cultural Centre and with the Swieqi Local Council. He is cur- rently based in Swieqi, where he maintains a studio with his wife. Vertigo is expected to fur- ther develop Hui's signature approach, blending Eastern ar- tistic concepts with Western oil painting techniques to con- struct layered, shifting perspec- tives that challenge viewers' per- ception of space and emotional balance.
