Interviewed on TVM's Mill-Kamra, Public Cleanli- ness Parliamentary Secretary Glenn Bedingfield said the bins are aimed at eliminating illegal dumping of rubbish near and around skips. People will be able to dispose of black and grey rub- bish bags at the facilities. "When you have skips rubbish ends up piling up next to it. The visuals of it are not nice, and so having underground facilities benefits everyone," Bedingfield said on Friday. He said the bins will be in- stalled at a Swieqi dumping hot- spot, as well as at two locations in Gozo. Bedingfield said the govern- ment is currently applying for planning permission due to en- croachment, and exploring the different technologies available on the market. During peak tourist seasons, a number of localities face in- creased illegal rubbish dumping. Bedingfield said cleansing offi- cials collect around seven tonnes daily from the Sliema and Swieqi areas, and a fur- ther seven tonnes every day from the Qawra and St Paul Bay areas. However, he a c k n o w l e d g e d that over the past two years the illegal rubbish dumping situation has improved.
