Architecture & Design | 35 F resh from its presence at Fuorisalone, Halmann Vella's reconstituted stone brand, Recobel, is making a strong impression on the international stage. The brand featured prominently in Chronolith, an architectural installation created in collaboration with Maltese design studio DAAA Haus and presented as part of Interni Materiae at the Università degli Studi di Milano. Chronolith took the form of a quadrant-shaped pavilion exploring themes of time, solar movement, and human interaction through the expressive use of reconstituted stone. The installation highlighted Recobel's new franka material qualities, characterised by warm, golden tones reminiscent of traditional Maltese limestone, combined with enhanced density and durability achieved through a casting process rather than conventional extraction and cutting. Composed of approximately 70% limestone waste from local construction and quarrying activities, Recobel aligns with the growing interest in circular construction methods. Its production reduces reliance on virgin resources while offering architects greater freedom in form and detailing. The material is available in three main categories: Architectural Terrazzo, Building & Cladding Solutions, and Landscaping Solutions, each offered in a range of textures and colours. The collaboration with DAAA Haus in Milan provided an opportunity to demonstrate Recobel's potential beyond local applications. The project positioned Maltese research and innovation in stone within a broader international conversation on materiality, heritage, and sustainability. Early feedback from the design community during and after Design Week suggests that the installation successfully drew attention to the thoughtful reuse of local resources in contemporary architectural expression. With over seventy years of experience in stone fabrication, Halmann Vella continues to develop the Recobel brand as a material that respects the visual and tactile language of Malta's built environment while responding to evolving environmental and technical demands. Further information on Recobel, including technical specifications and project references, is available at www. recobel.eu.
