THE Social Coordination Com- mittee within the Ministry for Gozo and Planning (MGP) plays an important role in pro- moting unity among employees by organizing activities that strengthen relationships and create a more positive working environment. It also organizes social and philanthropic initi- atives to raise funds and assist organizations and individuals in need, while increasing aware- ness on important topics such as physical and mental health, through campaigns and inform- ative meetings. These objectives were achieved through various ac- tivities organized throughout the year. Among the first initi- atives was Pink October, where employees were encouraged to wear something pink as a sign of solidarity. During this activity, donations were collected in aid of Puttinu Cares, while spon- sored cupcakes were distribut- ed. A total of €800 was raised from this initiative. Then, on November 24, the committee marked Movember by encour- aging employees to wear some- thing blue. On this occasion, an informative talk was delivered by Mr. Tony Cachia from the Malta Male Cancer Support Association, who spoke about the importance of men's health. The activity was very well re- ceived, and to further raise awareness, informative leaflets and decorated cupcakes were distributed. These initiatives clearly demonstrate how the committee is working with ded- ication not only for the benefit of employees but also for the wider community, by promot- ing solidarity and raising aware- ness on important health issues. Then, during the Christmas period, the committee launched a special initiative called "The Christmas Tree," aimed at supporting those in need. A Christmas tree was set up at the entrance of the Ministry, dec- orated with ornaments, each representing a wish or need of individuals and families assist- ed by various organizations, including Caritas, Dar l-Arka, the Social Work Unit, and Rigal b'Imħabba. This initiative saw strong participation. Donations collected for Rigal b'Imħabba were presented during an event held on December 16, 2025, in the presence of Dr. Lydia Abela. The committee also distributed gifts to other organizations. On the same day, a Christmas party was organized for the first time within the Ministry, featur- ing music, dancing, and food, where employees enjoyed a re- laxed atmosphere and celebrat- ed together during this special time. Between March 24 and 26, the committee organized a bake sale at the entrance of the Ministry, where figolli, plants, and other Easter-related sweets – donated by sponsors – were sold. A to- tal of €2,240 was raised in aid of Puttinu. In addition, on March 23, a walk from the Ministry premises to Ta' Pinu was or- ganized, giving employees the opportunity to meet outside working hours while contribut- ing to a worthy cause. Thanks to sponsors, participants were provided with water, a cupcake, and a commemorative book- mark. This walk raised €3,360. In total, from all the activities organized, an impressive sum of €6,400 was raised in aid of Puttinu Cares, a Maltese volun- tary organization that supports cancer patients and their fam- ilies, especially those requiring treatment abroad. Then, on the day of Our Lady of Sorrows, the committee or- ganized a mass for all the MGP staff at St. Francis Church in Victoria. This served as a mo- ment of reflection and spiritual gathering, where employees could pause from the fast pace of work and come together in an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation. These initiatives clearly show the commitment and dedica- tion of the Social Coordination Committee in creating a more united and humane working environment. Through these activities, not only are relationships among employees strengthened, but a culture of solidarity and gen- erosity towards the community is also fostered. The committee remains committed to building on these successes by nurturing a sense of unity, empathy, and social responsibility that makes a real difference in people's lives. 7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 8 MAY 2026 OPINION Strengthening workplace unity and community solidarity Christabelle Marie Grech, Leeanne Grech, Natasha Vella, Carmen Cefai & Rose Anne Re- falo, the Social Coor- dination Committee
