2 maltatoday | WEDNESDAY • 20 MAY 2026 NEWS ELECTION 2026 Borg says PN will release more details on mass transport proposal 'in the coming days' OPPOSITION Leader Alex Borg stated that the stops and other details of the PN's rapid mass transport system will be revealed "in the coming days." Borg was asked about the de- tails following the publication of the PN's manifesto, which did not mention details such as which parts of the island would be connected through the sys- tem. He once again promised to begin the planning and pro- curement process. "Obviously, in the coming days we'll show you where the stations will be, how many there will be, where the line will pass through, and even the time it takes to go from one sta- tion to another." Borg added that there will also be an app surrounding the pro- ject that is set to be revealed. 'No need for a new mosque,' Borg repeats Borg was also asked about his statement on Monday that Malta doesn't need a new mosque. During Monday's debate at the University of Malta, Borg and Robert Abela agreed that there is no need for a new mosque. Abela had stated that he wants to protect Maltese identity. MaltaToday could not door- step Abela on Tuesday, as he quietly left the venue while journalists were still doorstep- ping Alex Borg. Meanwhile, Borg told this newspaper that he leads a Christian-democratic party, "and so that is what we prac- tice." "When it comes to mosques, others can decide. I'm speak- ing clearly, I don't think there is a need for new mosques," he said. MATTHEW FARRUGIA mfarrugia@mediatoday.com.mt Life Network demands parties declare abortion, euthanasia stance before election UPCOMING general election to clearly state their positions on abortion and Voluntary Assisted Euthanasia (VAE), arguing that every voter in Malta and Gozo has the right to know their par- ty's position before casting their vote. The foundation requested that each party address with a yes or no answer whether they will support any changes to the Maltese law that would intro- duce abortion in the next leg- islature. Currently, abortion is illegal in Malta under some of the strictest laws in Europe, pos- sibly resulting in prison sen- tences ranging from 18 months to 3 years for the pregnant person and up to 4 years plus a revoked medical license for assisting professionals. While a 2023 amendment al- lows termination if a woman's life is at immediate risk, the procedure remains criminal- ised in almost all other circum- stances, including rape, incest, or fatal fetal anomalies. Once again with a simple yes or no answer, the foundation demanded that parties clearly define whether they will pro- pose or introduce any changes in the law to introduce VAE in the next legislature. For full transparent and dem- ocratic accountability, the Life Network Foundation pledged to publish the responses of all parties or candidates, or note the lack of one.
