5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 24 MAY 2026 ELECTION 2026 NEWS CONTINUES FROM PAGE 1 Overall figures show that until Friday, 34,309 voters, or 9.6% of the electorate, had yet to collect their voting document. There are 356,832 registered voters of which 322,523 are in possession of their voting document. The voting document is nec- essary to be able to vote in the 30 May general election. Vot- ers have until today, Sunday, to collect their voting document from police stations or local council offices. From Monday, anyone wanting to collect their voting document will have to do so from the Electoral Com- mission's offices at the Naxxar Counting Hall and the Experi- mental Farm in Xewkija, Gozo. District 4 has lowest uncollected voting cards The figures show that the lowest numbers of uncollect- ed voting documents are in the Labour-leaning districts—from the 2 District to the 7 District. The average in these districts stands at 7.2% of registered voters. The outliers are the 4 District, which has the lowest percentage overall of uncol- lected documents—5.9% of dis- trict voters—and the 3 District, which has the highest number of uncollected documents in this cohort—8.4%. Meanwhile, the highest num- ber of uncollected voting doc- uments apart from the 12 and 13 districts are found in the Na- tionalist-leaning 10 and 9 dis- tricts respectively. In the 10 District, which com- prises among others Sliema, St Julian's and Gżira, 3,578 votes remained uncollected or 12.9% of eligible voters on the district. This is followed by the 9 Dis- trict, which includes Msida, San Ġwann and Swieqi, where 2,800 voting documents, or 10.3% of district voters, remained uncol- lected by Friday. Sources close to the two major parties said these two districts are also home to voters who live in rented accommodation and who may have shifted res- idence without changing their ID card. However, according to one source, these districts also comprise a higher-than-aver- age number of foreigners who would have obtained citizen- ship and consequently the right to vote, but are disinterested in participating in the electoral process. It is almost impossible to say what these figures mean in po- litical terms by looking only at the district leanings, since it depends who the disinterested voters are. The two major political parties with their district and locality networks, would have internal information suggesting who the uncollected votes belong to. Sources close to the parties yes- terday suggested that there was a higher propensity of assumed Labour voters, who had not yet collected their voting document. Nonetheless, voters have until Thursday to pick up their voting document. District Voting docs % of district voters 1 2,765 10.3 2 2,087 7.6 3 2,335 8.4 4 1,553 5.9 5 1,949 7.1 6 1,864 7 7 1,873 7.1 8 2,340 8.4 9 2,800 10.3 10 3,578 12.9 11 2,298 8.6 12 4,435 16.8 13 4,441 13.9 UNCOLLECTED VOTING DOCUMENTS A total of 34,309 voting documents, 9.6% of registered voters, had not yet been collected by Friday.
