ELECTION 2026
The candidates elected
The Labour Party has obtained
a reduced five-seat parliamentary
majority • 10 women elected to
parliament so far
THE election on 30 May elected 65 MPs to
parliament across 13 districts. The Labour
Party elected 36 MPs against the National-
ist Party's 29. Based on the proportionality
mechanism, the PN was awarded two extra
seats that went to Frank Anthony Tabone and
Janice Abela Chetcuti. The final tally of seats
after the election is PL 36 and PN 31. The
election has so far returned 10 women MPs,
five on either side of the aisle.
Several candidates were elected on two
districts and will have to give up one of their
seats. These seats will be filled through
casual elections that will take place some-
time in the coming days. After the casual
elections, the gender mechanism will kick
in if the number of women MPs does not
reach 40% representation. Through this
mechanism, a further 12 women—six on ei-
ther side—will be elected.
