Green idea of the week 1027 Don't miss this Give nature a voice. Become a BirdLife member 1027. Fennel GREEN is not a particularly common colour in our countryside at this time of year. But a few hardy plants take the punishing summer drought in their stride, and one of these is the fennel (M. bużbież). Despite a summer that promises some serious heat spells, many country lanes are nonetheless alive with swathes of this tall, spindly aromatic plant. Its bright lemon-yellow flower "umbrellas" are one of the few colours one sees other than the brown earth and brown foliage of dry vegetation. Many creatures seem to like the taste of fennel: indeed a single fennel plant is a virtual ecosystem in itself, with bugs, bees, wasps, butterflies, hoverflies and beetles descend- ing on the flowers for a pollen/nectar hit. Not only, but the stalks and foliage are foraging, herding and hunting ground for aphids, ants, ladybirds, more bugs, lacewings, spiders, etc. all living out the dramatic – if on a minuscule scale – predator-prey game. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 28 JUNE 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon Visit FoEM Website for Registration: https://foemalta. org/event/kamp-kemmuna-edizzjoni-sajf/ The Aurora International Folk Festival Date: Ends today Location: Cathedral Square, Victoria, Gozo Experience the Aurora International Folk Festival in Gozo, where music, dance, and tradition come together in a vibrant celebration of culture.
