CLASSIFIEDS info@mediatoday.com.mt 8 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 12 JULY 2026 CULTURE & CLASSIFIEDS MaltaPost launches Euromed 2026 joint stamp issue: Traditional mosaics in the Mediterranean MALTAPOST has announced the issue of a new philatelic re- lease on Monday, 13 July 2026, forming part of the annual joint stamp project organised by the Postal Union for the Med- iterranean (PUMed). The com- mon theme for the 2026 issue is "Traditional Mosaics in the Mediterranean", celebrating one of the region's most endur- ing artistic traditions. For more than two millennia, mosaics have embellished pal- aces, villas, churches and oth- er important buildings across the Mediterranean. Created by arranging thousands of small pieces of coloured stone, mar- ble, glass or ceramic, these re- markable works of art combine extraordinary craftsmanship with enduring artistic expres- sion. To commemorate this year's theme, MaltaPost is issuing two miniature sheets showcas- ing exceptional examples of mosaic art from two distinct periods of Malta's rich cultural heritage—the Roman and the Byzantine traditions. The €2.00 miniature sheet features the celebrated Roman floor mosaic at the Domus Romana in Rabat. This important archaeological site contains the remains of an elegant Roman town house (do- mus) dating to the 1st century BC, when Malta formed part of the Roman Empire. The mosaic decorating the peristyle floor is renowned for its intricate ge- ometric border which creates a striking illusion of 3D depth. At its centre is a beautifully de- tailed "Drinking Doves" motif, depicting two birds perched on the rim of a bowl. The stamp photograph was taken by Daniel Cilia and is reproduced courte- sy of Heritage Malta. The €3.00 miniature sheet reproduces the magnificent mosaic of Christ Pantocrator (Christ, Ruler of All), located in the Chapel of Adoration with- in the 17th-century Basilica of St George Martyr in Victo- ria, Gozo. The chapel is richly adorned with Neo-Byzantine mosaics, with the iconic rep- resentation of Christ Pantoc- rator reflecting a tradition that has been central to Byzantine ecclesiastical art for centuries. The stamp photograph was taken by Sebio Aquilina and is reproduced courtesy of St George's Basilica. Each miniature sheet contains one stamp measuring 35mm x 35mm, with a comb perforation of 13.75 x 13.75, and bearing the Maltese Cross watermark. The sheets measure 80mm x 80mm and were printed by Printex Ltd using the offset process. The is- sue consists of 8,000 stamps per miniature sheet. The new philatelic issue will be available from all post offices in Malta and Gozo. Orders may be placed online at www.maltaphi- lately.com, or by mail from the Philatelic Bureau, MaltaPost p.l.c., 305, Qormi Road, Marsa, MTP 1001, via telephone 2596 1740 or e-mail info@maltaphi- lately.com Major Ġużeppi Briffa retrospective this summer at Gozo's Il-Ħaġar IL-ĦAĠAR|HEART of Gozo Museum is delight- ed to release the details of its next temporary exhibition: a landmark Ġużeppi Briffa retro- spective bringing togeth- er a large cross-section of works – no fewer than 110 – by this remarkably prolific artist, presenting his talent across its many facets. These include his work for churches, his as- sured draughtsmanship, his painterly sensibility, and his intelligent en- gagement with popular culture. Curated by Dr Christian Attard and structured around six thematic an- chors, this exhibition proposes that Ġużeppi Briffa's work occupies a complex mediating po- sition, straddling an in- tersection that remains, on the one hand, shaped by a late 19th-century demand for clarity and readability and, on the other, by an emerging de- sire to question the status quo and challenge visual conventions. Reluctant Modernism: The Art of Ġużeppi Briffa is being presented in the context of the 29th edi- tion of the Victoria In- ternational Arts Festival, and will be inaugurated on Sunday 21 June 2026 at 11:00. Everyone is in- vited to the official open- ing. The exhibition runs until 8 September 2026 and can be viewed dur- ing Il-Ħaġar Museum's opening hours of 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Sunday (including public holidays). Ad- mission to Il-Ħaġar is free.
