2 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 26 JULY 2026 ART Art works by Olaug Vethal NORWEGIAN artist Olaug Ve- thal (1946–2007) made Malta her home in 1988 after spending much of her student and adult life in Hamburg, Germany. Cap- tivated by the island's people, culture and landscapes, she de- veloped a distinctive expression- istic style characterised by bold colour, spontaneous brushwork and emotional depth. A prolific artist, Vethal explored figurative painting, portraits, landscapes, abstraction and themes inspired by Malta's prehistoric heritage, always seeking to express what lay beyond the visible world. Alongside her artistic practice, she taught A Level students at De La Salle Sixth Form, in- spiring many emerging artists. Vethal exhibited extensively in Malta and abroad and collab- orated on the renowned Malta Jazz Festival painting projects, together with Jeni Caruana and Ebba von Fersen Balzan (cur- rently showing at Christine X Art Gallery) . Her legacy lives on through hundreds of paint- ings and drawings that celebrate humanity, spirituality and Mal- tese culture. Beyond the Visible: The Metaphysical Worlds of Olaug Vethal, curated by Chris- tine Xuereb, will be presented at Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta, from 4 September to 25 October 2026.
