Become a BirdLife member 1031. Oleander THE oleander is that familiar shrub we often see lining centre strips along our roads. By and large, landscaping people have an eternal love affair with alien plants, but for the oleander – a Mediterra- nean species – they make a happy exception, no doubt because of the masses of flowers it opens in high summer, braving even these blistering heatwaves (for now at least). As with all native plants of these regions, the oleander (M. oljandru) has evolved to survive our dry Mediterranean summers; the wild (pale pink) form may have once grown wild in Malta, probably along the wetter valleys. An old name for this shrub is siġra tal-wirdien (cockroach tree), so some people conclude that the oleander attracts cockroaches.
