Flying Gurnard AMONG the many fishes that grace our shallow waters, the flying gurnard (M. bies) stands out, if not literally – like most creatures that prowl the sandy bottoms, this fish uses camouflage to blend into the featureless surrounding. Once spotted and approached, however (even if it's only a curious snorkeller coming in for an ad- miring gaze or a picture), it unfurls its pièce de résistance: a pair of extra-large, extra-wide pectoral fins that flash a magnificent phos- phorescent blue. If that doesn't scare off the intruder, the fish snaps shut its 'wings' and shoots off like a small blunt-headed torpedo. The flying gurnard feeds on sand-living bivalves and invertebrates, which it sifts about for with special 'fingers' along the front edge of its pectoral fins. Despite its name, however, the flying gurnard doesn't launch itself into the air in flying-fish fashion. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 9 AUGUST 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon Download the App Now: www.thefoodconnect.eu/ The sixth episode of the FoEM Podcast is out!
