Green idea of the week 1034 Don't miss this Give nature a voice. Become a BirdLife member 1034. Black-crowned night-heron HERONS are long-legged wetland birds. We get six or seven spe- cies of herons migrating regularly over Malta (plus some rarer ones), sometimes in nice big flocks. One of these is the night-heron, so called because it often flies by night, resting in large trees during the day. To keep the flock together while flying in the dark, the birds often emit short croaky calls – known as contact calls – which is what gave this bird its Maltese name: kwakka (no relation to ducks!). Around this time many of them will have concluded their nesting season and will start winging their way southward across the Med- iterranean to Africa, often stopping by for a rest in a welcoming clump of trees. Like all herons, the night-heron is protected but many still get shot every year by trigger-happy morons. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 16 AUGUST 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon Listen on Spotify The sixth episode of the FoEM Podcast is out!
