Nature Notebook FRIENDS of the Earth Malta is taking new steps to reduce waste and promote more sustainable habits on Comino. OUR latest actions include a beach box with shared items, using objects collected from local beaches and donated by Nature Trust. Visitors can borrow what they need, clean it after use and return it for the next person. WE are also introducing Tukino, a second-hand tuk-tuk powered entirely by solar energy, which will support our environmental work around the island. NEW waste separation bins are being introduced to make recycling clearer and easier for visitors. Even small actions can make a differ- ence, including donating BCRS containers, which can help support our environmental mission. TOGETHER, these initiatives aim to keep Comino cleaner while encouraging everyone to enjoy the island more responsibly. Green idea of the week 1035 Don't miss this Give nature a voice. Become a BirdLife member 1035. Sea squill IN the coming days the sea squill (M. għansar) will start to bloom. After a dry summer that withers its large fleshy leaves to a crisp, you'd think the plant had died. But suddenly and right out of the bare earth, this weird vertical stalk appears, thin and pale and leaf- less, grows a metre tall and then opens a plume of exquisite flowers. That's the magic trick of bulb plants. Like a medieval castle, the sea squill grows its food in times of plenty (= winter and spring), but with impending hardship (= summer) it draws all produce into the bunker (= the underground bulb), shuts all exits (= withers leaves) and survives on its stored goodness. Its other trick is to flower at just the time when there are very few other competing flowers, and so gets all the insects' attention. Neat! 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 23 AUGUST 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon Learn more on kemmuna.org Spot our new action on Comino
