YORGEN Fenech's three- day cross-examination ended on Tuesday, with prosecu- tor Godwin Cini raising his voice and telling the accused his "fingerprints" are all over Daphne Caruana Galizia's murder. Immediately after, the de- fence launched an equally forceful attack on the state's case, branding it a "cov- er-up" and a "frame-up", and attacking Melvin Theuma's credibility. Cini sought to establish that Caruana Galizia's grow- ing interest in 17 Black had placed Fenech under mount- ing pressure before her murder. He confronted the accused with a 2015 email listing 17 Black as a target client of the Panama compa- nies linked to former OPM Chief of Staff Keith Schem- bri and former Energy Min- ister Konrad Mizzi. Fenech distanced himself from the arrangement, in- sisting there had been "no interaction" and saying he only learned through the media who owned the Pan- ama companies. The pros- ecutor then directly put the alleged motive to him, ask- ing whether he had Caruana Galizia killed to stop her ex- posing transactions linked to his projects and companies. "No, absolutely not," Fenech replied. Cini also confronted him with another email in which Fenech described the project as a "huge mistake", it had "almost killed" him and was "petrified" of media conse- quences. Fenech attributed this to his state of mind as a result of heavy drug use, personal problems and the collapse of his marriage. The company's business model was cast into the spotlight following a Malt- aToday investigation that showed how it resembled a Ponzi scheme. "The Malta Police Force is aware of these reports and joint investigations, with other entities are being carried out," a police spokesperson said in re- ply to questions by MaltaToday. The police join the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) and the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) in their ongoing probes over DistributeX's po- tentially illegal business structure.
