Nature Notebook DOLPHINS are native to Maltese waters and an important part of our marine ecosystem. Their presence reflects the richness of the seas sur- rounding our islands, but increasing human activity and disturbance are putting growing pressure on marine life. Friends of the Earth Mal- ta recently joined a coalition, led by Eco Marine Malta, to address the increasing harassment of dolphins in Malta's waters. Dolphins should be able to live in their natural environment without being subjected to reckless approaches, chasing or other forms of disturbance.Protecting dolphins also means protecting the wider marine ecosystem they de- pend on. Healthy seas provide shelter and food for countless species and play an essential role in the wellbeing of our islands and communities. THIS is why the third demand of our Save Our Shores petition calls for stronger protection of Malta's marine and coastal ecosystems. Our shores and seas are a shared natural heritage, and decisions about them should put the common good, environmental protection and future generations before the interests of a privileged few. Purple heron BIRD migration is on the move, and herons are no exception. The purple heron (M. russett aħmar) is one of a half dozen regular her- on species that yearly grace our skies and wetlands, and a flock of them sailing overhead in V-formation are quite eye-catching – there were a few such spectacles this week (one flock of 70+ birds landed at Is-Simar nature reserve). On the ground it's all stealth. For all its large size, the purple heron disappears if it chooses to stand still in a clump of reeds. The "purple" in the name refers to the reddish brown plumage on their head, neck and front. The cryptic plumage and the thin body profile help them blend perfectly with the habitat. Purple herons are declining, due largely to reedbed and wetland de- struction, and hunters certainly do not help the situation.
