The free event, titled A Taste of Maltese History, will take place on Wednesday 7 October from 10:30am to 11:30am at the library in St Francis Square, Victoria. Gauci, a Maltese maritime historian and author whose research draws extensively on historical archives, will discuss aspects of Malta's seafaring past, including the world of Maltese corsairs and the con- nections between food, war, trade and life at sea. The talk, which will be de- livered in English, will also feature selected readings from Gauci's published works, in- cluding writings on love letters from Malta. Gauci's research has helped shed light on the lives of Mal- tese corsairs – sailors who op- erated under letters of marque – and their place within the wider Mediterranean world of empire, commerce and surviv- al. His latest book, Morte o For- tuna: Corsairs in Malta 1747– 1798, published by BDL Books in 2024, builds on his earlier acclaimed study 'In the Name of the Prince' and further ex- amines Malta's corsairing tra- dition and naval trade during the 18th century. The event is being organised as part of the activities of Book Club Gozo, with the support of Heritage Malta and Malta Li- braries. Attendance is free, but ad- vance reservations are encour- aged. Gozo children learn about EU through games and quizzes during Skola Sajf CHILDREN in Gozo took part in interactive activities focused on the European Union as part of this year's Skola Sajf programme. Throughout July, EUROPE DI- RECT Gozo, in collaboration with Servizzi Ewropej f'Malta (SEM), delivered a series of sessions aimed at introducing younger au- diences to the EU in an engaging and accessible way. The sessions covered the EU's 27 Member States, Malta's mem- bership of the European Union, the EU flag and the bloc's motto, United in diversity (Magħqudin fid-diversità). Children also learned fun facts about different EU countries and took part in interactive questions and a quiz designed to test their knowledge. A penalty shootout game was also included in the activities, combining learning with play and encouraging the children to en- gage with the subject in a relaxed environment.
