The resulting area provides sci- entists with a natural laboratory in which to examine the effects of sustained warming on marine or- ganisms. This is particularly relevant as the Mediterranean is experienc- ing rising sea temperatures and increasingly frequent marine heatwaves. At the same time, Malta's posi- tion along the route of species en- tering the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal has facilitated the establishment of numerous non-native species. Among the most suc- cessful is the pearl oyster, which has become widespread in Maltese waters and can oc- cur in dense aggregations on the seabed. The species is also known to interact with native com- munities, including Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. Oysters from three different temperatures Researchers collected pearl oys- ters at a depth of three metres from three locations around De- limara. The reference site at Fort St Luc- jan had a water temperature of 26.3°C, while the water intake ar- ea recorded 27.1°C. The warmest sampling site, at the heated-water discharge in Il-Ħofra ż-Żgħira, re- corded 28.5°C. The researchers first examined the oysters' shells and body condi- tion and found that the specimens were broadly comparable in size and general condition. This allowed them to focus on differences in their internal physi- ological responses associated with exposure to different tempera- tures. The results showed that the oys- ters were able to cope with the moderately warmer conditions by increasing their antioxidant de- fences. A n t i o x i - dants help p r o - t e c t cells against p o - tentially damaging molecules generated when organisms are exposed to environmental stress. But at 28.5°C, the oysters showed more pronounced signs of physio- logical strain. Their gills, which are essential for both respiration and filtering food from the water, showed mi- croscopic cellular damage. The oysters also altered their metabolism, with muscle tissue showing signs of reduced energy production. The researchers in- terpret this as a form of metabolic conservation, whereby the ani- mals reduce energy expenditure in response to prolonged thermal stress. 'Living sensors' for a warming sea The findings point to a potential use for the invasive oyster beyond its role as a non-native species. Be- cause physiological changes can occur before visible signs of pop- ulation decline, monitoring the health of pearl oysters could pro- vide an early indication of thermal stress in coastal waters. In this sense, the oys- ters can function as biological or "living sensors", allow- ing researchers to detect changes in the marine envi- ronment at cellular level. The study also underlines an important limitation to the as- sumption that invasive species will necessarily benefit from warmer Mediterranean waters. The pearl oyster has successfully established itself in Malta and is considered a highly tolerant spe- cies, but the Delimara experiment indicates that its tolerance is not unlimited. Continued warming could therefore eventually place even established heat-tolerant species under physiological pressure, particularly in shallow coastal en- vironments where temperatures can rise rapidly. The researchers' findings sug- gest that studying these early bi- Il-Hofra z-Zghira at Delimara, where warm water from the power station complex cooling system is discharged into the sea, creating a marine environment where the invasive pearl oyster species can thrive (Photo: Kurt Sansone/MaltaToday) The pearl oyster, which scientists hope to use as a 'living sensor' to monitor the impacts of rising sea temperatures
