Camilleri raised the issue dur- ing a high-level discussion with European Coordinator Gesine Meissner and representatives of the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions (CPMR) on the development of the European Maritime Space. The minister stressed the im- portance of maritime transport for Gozo, describing connectiv- ity as an essential lifeline for the island's economic activity, social cohesion and territorial develop- ment. Camilleri highlighted the in- vestment required at Mġarr port and called for greater European support for smaller islands and peripheral regions to modernise their maritime fleets and improve port infrastructure. He said Mġarr and other small regional ports remain key links between islands and the Euro- pean continent, and argued that their specific needs should be reflected in European transport and maritime policies. The minister also called for the European Maritime Area to place greater emphasis on resilient, af- fordable and year-round connec- tions for islands. He said Public Service Obliga- tion routes and small regional ports should receive appropriate recognition and support, particu- larly given their importance to island communities. Camilleri also addressed the green transition, arguing that ef- forts to decarbonise the maritime sector should not come at the ex- pense of connectivity. He called for targeted Euro- pean support to help smaller is- land-based maritime operators and ports modernise their in- frastructure and move towards cleaner technologies. As part of the CPMR delegation, Camilleri also attended a meeting with MEP Sérgio Gonçalves, rap- porteur on the European Parlia- ment's report on the European Union Ports Strategy. The meeting focused on work being carried out in the European Parliament and the next steps to- wards the EU Ports Strategy. Camilleri called for the strategy to take into account the particu- lar challenges faced by islands, in- cluding Gozo, while ensuring fair access to funding and balancing competitiveness with territorial cohesion. He also stressed the need for adequate support for the decar- bonisation of island ports and maritime transport. Camilleri said Malta and Gozo would continue raising their con- cerns at European level, with the aim of ensuring that island and peripheral regions are not left behind as Europe moves towards a more sustainable and resilient maritime sector.
