7 gozotoday | FRIDAY • 2 OCTOBER 2026 NEWS Gozitans should not have to travel to Malta for justice services, Alex Borg says PN leader Alex Borg says tribunals and boards that can operate in Gozo should start doing so, as he calls for greater access to justice services on the island GOZITANS should not have to travel to Malta to access tribunals and boards that can operate on the island, PN leader Alex Borg said. Borg made the comments dur- ing a meeting with Avukati Għaw- dex (Gozo Lawyers' Association), an organisation representing law- yers who primarily practise be- fore the Gozo Court. PN deputy leader Alex Perici Calascione also attended the meeting. Avukati Għawdex president Chris Said said Gozo's courts have particular needs which dif- fer from those in Malta, arguing that judicial policies and services should take these circumstances into account. The organisation called for tri- bunals and boards that are capa- ble of operating in Gozo to begin holding proceedings on the is- land. The meeting also focused on the need for a new courthouse in Gozo, with Avukati Għawdex highlighting the shortcomings of the existing building. Said pointed out that the current courthouse does not even have a room for lawyers, while stressing the need for adequate facilities for legal professionals, court employ- ees and members of the public. Borg said the PN had "long called" for a new courthouse and greater investment in Gozo's judi- cial services. However, he argued that Gozitans should not have to wait for the new building to be com- pleted before services that could already be provided in Gozo are made available on the island. The PN leader also raised the need for greater efficiency with- in the Family Court, particularly in relation to the service of court notices. Avukati Għawdex, which was established five years ago, also an- nounced that the opening of the Forensic Year will be held in Gozo for the first time. The organisation welcomed the move but said it should be involved in discussions on the future of justice services on the island, including the planned new courthouse, which is currently at the tender stage. Borg said the opposition sup- ports Avukati Għawdex's call for greater involvement, adding that justice services in Gozo should be efficient and respond to the needs of Gozitans.
