Green idea of the week 1039 Don't miss this Give nature a voice. Become a BirdLife member 1041. Maghrebian bat BATS have always suffered a bad reputation: for ages, their body parts have been used in sorcery with malevolent intent, and devil il- lustrations invariably sport bat wings – and Mr Stoker's gothic classic didn't improve their lot. Such a pity, because bats are actually harm- less and hugely interesting: they're the only truly flying mammals, and their echolocation is as fascinating as it is incredible. We get (pos- sibly) about 10 species in Malta, one of which is the Maghrebian bat (M. vespertin). Like other bats in Malta it's not particularly common and its survival is threatened by habitat destruction, disturbance and persecution. All our bats are insectivorous, and they're very efficient at it too: one bat can consume 2000 mosquitoes and moths in a single night. So forget the blood-sucking and tangling-in-your-hair stories, and let's just be grateful for the free pest control service, if for nothing else. One last thing: bats aren't blind. 5 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 4 OCTOBER 2026 ALMANAC Victor Falzon, Matthew Borg Cardona (Photo) Register Now: https://foemalta.org/event/cineamb- jent-film-festival-2026/ ĊineAmbjent Film Festival returns this October
