ONLY 16.1% of people said they
expected Yorgen Fenech to be ac-
quitted, while 40.8% said they did
not expect the verdict, a MaltaTo-
day survey shows.
Respondents were asked wheth-
er they expected Yorgen Fenech's
not-guilty verdict. They were also
given the option of stating that
they had not followed the case,
did not know, or did not want to
answer.
Fenech was acquitted of com-
plicity in the wilful homicide of
Daphne Caruana Galizia and of
associating with a person or per-
sons for the purpose of commit-
ting a crime. A nine-member jury
returned an 8-1 not-guilty verdict
on both counts. The verdict, de-
livered on 2 September after a
55-day trial, came as a surprise to
many and triggered public pro-
tests and expressions of disbelief
and anger, including from Carua-
na Galizia's family. The Attorney
General has since filed an appeal
against the acquittal.
