In a social media post, Camill- eri said the main focus of the meetings was on "internation- al sporting opportunities" for Gozo. He also highlighted Gozo's role in the upcoming Com- monwealth Youth Games, saying the island will host the triathlon and netball compe- titions when the event is held in 2027. "Next year, Gozo will be hosting the Triathlon and Netball competitions of the Commonwealth Youth Games 2027," Camilleri said. The Gozo Minister said the government's plans extend beyond the Commonwealth Youth Games, adding that work is underway to make Gozo "a hub for international competi- tive sport". The Commonwealth Youth Games are expected to bring young athletes from across the Commonwealth to Malta, with Gozo set to host two of the sport- ing disciplines. The nets had been con- cealed among trees in a remote area, with an elec- tronic caller reportedly being used to lure birds to- wards the trapping site. Police dismantled the site and confiscated the equip- ment, the Ranger Unit said. The unit also claimed that several hunters in the vi- cinity, who were using quail callers, left the area after noticing rangers and police officers on site. The Malta Ranger Unit said it is increasing its pres- ence in Gozo to deter ille- gal bird trapping and urged the public to report the use of electronic bird callers. Members of the public can send reports, including a Google Maps pin and a recording of the caller, via WhatsApp on 7937 8118.
