CLASSIFIEDS info@mediatoday.com.mt 8 maltatoday | SUNDAY • 25 OCTOBER 2026 BOOKS & CLASSIFIEDS More than 700,000 books borrowed from Malta's public libraries MORE than 700,000 books were borrowed from Malta's public li- braries over the past year, with almost 40,000 new titles added to library collections during the same period. The figures were announced during the launch of the National Reading Marathon at San Ġwak- kin Primary School in Marsaskala. Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri and Emeri- tus President Marie-Louise Colei- ro Preca launched the initiative under the theme Surrounded by Stories, which focuses on sto- ries from different cultures and encourages children to explore traditions, share experiences and develop values such as respect, empathy and unity. Malta currently has almost 60 public libraries across the islands, in addition to the Central Library in Floriana. These offer free book loans in Maltese and English. "Reading is one of the most im- portant tools we can give our chil- dren," Camilleri said. He added that books help children discover new worlds, expand their vocab- ulary, develop creativity and gain confidence in expressing their thoughts and ideas. Camilleri said reading should become a lifelong habit rath- er than an activity limited to a particular initiative or the com- pletion of a book. He added that investment in public libraries and the expansion of their collections were intended to help more chil- dren and young people find books that interested them. During the launch, students presented work inspired by the theme and took part in discus- sions with Reading Ambassadors. Camilleri and Coleiro Preca also joined students in reading ses- sions. Coleiro Preca called for great- er participation in the initiative, saying that stories had the power to bring people together despite their differences. "Through reading, we are plant- ing the seeds of respect, empathy and inclusion in children — val- ues that shape a fairer and more united future," she said. The National Reading Mara- thon was first launched in 2018 by the National Literacy Agency in collaboration with the Presi- dent's Trust. Over the years, the initiative has encouraged students not only to read but also to share their own stories and learn from others. Fostering connections between generations During the 2025/2026 school year, students met residents at the San Vinċenz de Paul long-term care facility, using reading and storytelling to foster connections between generations. This year's edition builds on that approach by encouraging students to explore stories from different cultures and consider how storytelling can help people understand one another. Students also spoke about the importance of reading in their ed- ucation. Ella Ellul, a student at St Joan Antide Primary School, said she enjoyed reading in both Maltese and English, particularly mystery, humorous and fantasy stories, as well as non-fiction books. "Reading is important to me be- cause when you are writing some- thing, reading gives you ideas," she said. Martha Vella, a student at Tarx- ien Primary School within St Thomas More College, also said reading helped students develop their thinking and improve their vocabulary.
