Architecture & Design | 23 Hospitality Design Award – Stilla San Mikiel Guesthouse, Cospicua. An elegant, assured intervention that preserves a sense of place, joining old and new without mimicry and offering inspiration to its neighbourhood. Unbuilt Projects Award – URNA. A multidisciplinary proposal that breaks away from archaic typologies and turns the quarry into a place of ritual and memory. Multi-Unit Residential Design, Commendation – Salvina, Mellieħa. A contemporary structure that supports long- standing family traditions: modern, yet at ease within its context. Architectural Design Student Medal – BastuBaħar, by Matthias Galea Souchet. An extensive volumetric study with a deep sensitivity to context, proposing a novel approach to beach life that turns seasonality upside down. Role models The Galizia Leadership Award, presented by Planning Authority Executive Chairman Johann Buttigieg, went to Steve Zammit Lupi for his passionate advocacy for sustainable mobility and community. As president of Rota he campaigned for streets designed around people, and as Mayor of Ħaż- Żebbuġ he has carried that conviction into local leadership. The Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Kamra tal- Periti President Perit André Pizzuto, honoured Perit Joseph Bugeja for more than fifty years shaping Malta's relationship with the sea. He led the civil engineering works of Malta International Airport, oversaw the reclamation of thirty hectares for Freeport Terminal 2, served as the Freeport's General Manager from 1997 to 2004, and has lectured at the University of Malta since 2014. Voices from the evening Opening the ceremony, the Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Employment, Dr Jonathan Attard, described quality in the built environment as a national responsibility rather than an optional extra. "The decisions we make today and the places we create will shape the quality of life of future generations," he said. "We must therefore continue working together to raise standards, promote excellence and ensure that we leave behind a country of which future generations can be proud." He also highlighted the ongoing work with the Kamra on the Building Codes and the National Architecture Policy, encouraging professionals to take part in the upcoming public consultation. Perit André Pizzuto, President of the Kamra tal-Periti described the night as a chance to celebrate the profession and the architects whose projects have made a difference to people's lives, expressing the hope that this first joint edition marks the beginning of broader collaboration. Taken together, the winners and the speeches carried a few clear messages. Quality is not a matter of size or budget: a Gozo school and a small guesthouse in Cospicua stood alongside a national cultural landmark. Heritage is a starting point, not a constraint. Good architecture is a team effort. And collaboration between the profession and the planning regulator can raise the bar for everyone. The winners were chosen by an international jury of five: Esra Serdar Aydınoğlu, Pepe Gascón, Dmitri Jajich, Andrea Griletto and Richard Beckett, with Perit Chris Briffa as Local Head Juror. The edition was supported by Attard Materials, the JMV Group, Vivendo, the Macmed Group, FORM and ESS. Emanuele Luigi Galizia believed that good work is a public duty. This year's winners showed that his standard is alive and well.
