26 | Architecture & Design Every element within the apartment was custom designed specifically for the project. Bespoke joinery integrates storage directly into the architecture, allowing the interior to remain visually calm while accommodating the practical requirements of everyday living. Mirrored wardrobes amplify natural light, concealed storage responds to the building's irregular geometry, and multifunctional furniture allows each space to perform more than one role without increasing visual complexity. The colour palette was drawn directly from Malta's landscape, pairing Mediterranean blues with warm limestone tones to establish continuity between the interior and its surroundings. The living room and kitchen are colour-drenched in blue, visually extending the apartment towards the sky beyond, while beige microcement floors reference the island's limestone architecture. Carefully positioned mirrors reflect natural light and views back into the apartment, further enhancing the perception of openness. The project's geometric language draws influence from both the Bauhaus and Memphis movements, balancing functional clarity with moments of playfulness. Diagonal compositions appear throughout the flooring, joinery and shelving, subtly directing movement while reinforcing the visual connection towards the terrace. Positioned at the quietest end of the apartment, the sleeping area is enclosed by full-height blue velvet curtains that allow the space to expand or contract depending on how the apartment is occupied. Traditional Maltese timber apertures were reconstructed in accordance with conservation guidelines before being painted Studio NiCHE's signature yellow, introducing a contemporary intervention while respecting the building's historic character.
