Architecture & Design | 9
A
rchitecture is often judged by what
we see: the lines of a building, the
materials, the play of light and the
details that make a design stand out. But what
about everything beyond the walls? The streets
we walk, the squares where we gather and the
historic character that gives our towns their
identity?
In this issue of Architecture & Design, we
explore these questions with architect and
urban designer Antoine Zammit, founder of
STUDJURBAN, whose work brings architecture,
urban design, research and planning policy
into the same conversation.
In our main interview, Antoine reflects on
Malta's changing urban landscape, the
challenges of balancing development with
heritage, and why creating successful places
means looking beyond individual buildings.
From the regeneration of public spaces in
Mosta and Birgu to the wider-reaching Slow
Streets project across 43 localities in Malta and
Gozo, his work highlights the importance of
designing environments that serve the people
who use them every day.
It is a timely conversation in a country where
development continues to reshape familiar
streets and skylines, raising important
questions about what we choose to preserve,
what we build anew and how we want to live.
This issue also features a selection of projects
and perspectives that showcase the people,
ideas and design approaches shaping our built
environment. From considered architectural
interventions to thoughtful responses to
context, each offers a different insight into the
relationship between design and the places we
inhabit.
Because good architecture is about more
than creating something beautiful. It is about
creating something that belongs, works and
endures.
And in Malta, that conversation has never been
more important.
