20 Events maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 2 OCTOBER 2013 Citadel Insurance staff participate in car free day IN support of Car Free Day, Cita- del Insurance has sponsored 50% of the Valletta Electric Cabs fee on Friday, 20 September. Through this initiative, Citadel is promoting the increase of use of this greener means of transport in and around our capital city. Citadel Insurance employees also played a direct role in the promotion of initiatives aimed at improving air quality. They used alternative means to reach their offices on Tuesday 17 September as part of a Car Free Day initiative. Citadel staff travelled to their places of work together with their colleagues by means of car sharing, others used mini buses while some were more adventurous and opted for the water taxi. Those living close to the Company's branch network around Malta travelled on foot. The benefit gained out of this initiative was twofold as staff donated the money saved on fuel to charity. "At first glance, it seemed to be a challenge to find alternative means of transport, but we had quite a number of interesting suggestions. I'm very proud that Citadel's staff proposed to promote car free day, which idea was fully supported by management. Everyone was keen to do their part to reduce their carbon footprint," Angela Tabone, managing director of Citadel Insurance plc, said. Citadel rewards clients who safeguard our environment through savings available on its branded eco home and motor polices. Customers benefit from special prices if they own cars with low Co2 emissions, or install solar water heaters or PVs. Citadel's long term commitment is to raise awareness on a cleaner environment. The Company has been sponsoring a Valletta green cab since 2008 as part of its corporate social responsibility towards reducing carbon footprint. BOV 'Cards for Charity' is back. It was launched on Sunday at the end of the Caritas Trail which marked the kick off of the Caritas Week. This is a week dedicated entirely to raising much needed funds to support the programmes and activities offered by Caritas Malta. The first ever Caritas Trail solicited an overwhelming response, with hundreds of individuals taking to the streets and walking, cycling or running in aid of Caritas Malta. The walk was led by Mgr Carmelo Farrugia, Deputy Director of Caritas Malta, flanked by Charles Borg CEO Bank of Valletta and Joseph Gafa CEO Maltapost. Mgr Victor Grech thanked everyone for responding to Caritas' appeal for help. "This is the first time in 28 years that Caritas opened its doors to the general public. It was not an easy decision for us to take, but it was necessary to raise much needed funds to ensure the survival of our four centres and the programmes we offer." Charles Borg CEO Bank of Valletta launched the 'Cards for Charity' campaign, saying, "It is heart-warming to be here today during an event where so many people came together to help out others in need. Caritas plays a pivotal role in our society, offering services free of charge to those who need them most." BOV CEO went on to explain how the campaign will work. "This year the Cards for Charity campaign is being organized in aid of Caritas (Malta). Anyone can help raise thousands of euros towards this cause by simply using the BOV cards to effect payments. No additional costs will be incurred by the card owner." Bank of Valletta will be making a donation for every transaction effected between the 29 September and 31 October using a BOV debit or credit card." "Caritas Malta depends heavily on donations to continue to offer its services, free of charge to people in need," Mgr Carmelo Farrugia said. "We would like to encourage the public to participate in the BOV Cards for Charity campaign, so that through the Bank's donation, Caritas Malta remains in a position to continue providing all of its services." The Cards for Charity Campaign is being organised as part of the Bank's extensive Community Programme. BOV customers will benefit from the advantages of this efficient method of payment, with Caritas Malta gaining from each and every transaction effected through the Bank's strong involvement within the Maltese Community.
