24 Sport maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 9 OCTOBER 2013 SPORTTODAY MOTORSPORTS Galea and Grech win ASMK Autocross classes in first event SUNDAY 6th October opened a new page together with the opening of the 2013-2104 ASMK Autocross National Championship. For another year Mssr.Buhagiar of Pasta Poiatti are sponsoring the 'Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi' championships for the Autocross, the Motocross, Trials and Enduro too. Following the early day's long hours of rain showers 27 drivers started the day long event. These included a number of competition cars and supporters from Gozo. This launch day was awaited by many enthusiasts and drivers to. During the qualifying heats Mario Scicluna on an Opel Corsa and Ivan Birmingham on a Suzuki Swift won the highest points of the day though no driver won all the three heats. On the Class A Start-line there were Gordon Johnson on his newly built Peugeot 205, Christian Galea on his Runner-up Fiat Ritmo, Matthew Borg and Philip Joe Vella both on Opel Nova and obviously Mario Scicluna u Ivan Birmingham. As soon as the Red Light went off all the six cars accelerated violently right to the first right hander. Galea took the lead while Vella and Borg followed close behind. While these latter two battled between them Galea built a margin between them. Fourth placed Scicluna was challenged all the way by Johnson and Birmingham. Yet Galea won the race and gained 9 points on the valuable championship scale. The Class B Finalists were Josef Grech on a Ford Fiesta, Ryan Scerri and Godwin Martin both on an Opel Corsa, Melo Zammit on a Ford Escort 3 and Andrew Pisani on an Opel Nova and Lucas Pace on a Honda Civic. From the start Scerri took the lead followed by Grech and Zammit but soon Scerri had to retire due to a mechanical failure and though Grech and Zam- mit took the first two places Pisani started his challenge on Zammit. In the meantime Martin was pressing on Pace who later retired after hit- ting a boundary tyre on the track. Lap after lap Grech took the Finish Flag ahead of Zammit, Pisani, Martin and Pace. Though the pressure was high yet the sportsmanship excelled. ASMK President Mr Deguara presented the trofies the the winners on site. For this Race launch H.E. Dr George Abela President of Malta was expected to attend this event. Due to some reason His Excellency will be attending at the ASMK Race Circuits at Ta Qali for the next event on Sunday 27th October. This event will include the Autocross and Motocross too. Each Sunday of this month ASMK will be organizing a sporting event. On Sunday 13th October ASMK is launching the Trials Championship. Trials riders will compete motorcycles specially built to ride over natural and manmade obstacles. The game is not speed but it's a challenge where the Section is passed over without the rider putting down a foot all the way through. If not, the rider will gain Penalty Points which count for the final classification. Sunday 13th event starts at 9.00am till about 1.00pm at the ASMK Race Circuits at Ta Qali.
