Kinemastik Film Festival 2014 open to submissions TEN years have passed since the first Kinemastik International Short Film Festival. What started as an experiment between friends in 2004 has grown into a mature festival, bringing a little bit of the world onto Maltese shores. Kinemastik itself is today a recognisable brand, identifiable by everything which is contemporary, new and cutting edge. In its many years of existence it has collaborated with many local and foreign entities. Kinemastik would like to invite all filmmakers to submit their shorts for the 10th Kinemastik International Short Film Festival that will take place in Malta between July 15 and August 3, 2014. Films from all genres and all continents will be accepted as long as they are less than 30 minutes in length, completed after April 2012 and they reach our snail mail or email box by April 15, 2014. Films in foreign languages must be subtitled in English and English language films are encouraged to have subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The selected films will be screened as part of the Kinemastik International Short Film Festival 2014 which will start with the smallest but most important event: The Children's Film Festival followed by various screenings, workshops, parties and concerts that will take place throughout the following two weeks. When Chrysander [Agius] and I sat down to discuss a concept for a new production, we jotted down tens of different ideas. While sifting through our options, we were both drawn to the idea of having a New Wave Religion type of preacher/healer who is visited by past members of his original choir, each bringing their own baggage, and confronting their former leader. How did you envisage the dynamic between the characters to unfold? Did your sympathies lie with a particular character to begin with? Not exactly. It's more the other way round really. I just hate anybody who capitalises on others' weaknesses for YOUR FIRST CLICK OF THE DAY www.maltatoday.com.mt their own gain – in this case a man who's portraying himself as a leader and a healer, in order to extort money from his followers. I'm not saying that all healers are like this, far from it, but unfortunately some do manipulate their congregation for personal gain. What are the particular challenges of presenting an all-original script (and in Maltese) on the local stage? In terms of attracting an audience, the biggest hurdle is that an original script is unknown and people might be sceptical about it. Producing a renowned play obviously attracts more people. I don't believe that a script in Maltese is at a disadvantage. Of course there might be those who prefer a play to be in English but I think that this works the other way round too. The cast includes Chrysander Agius, Daniel Chircop, Gertrude Borg Marks, Noel Tanti, Alba Florian Viton, Kris Spiteri, Jade Marie Vella, Lara Azzopardi, Jean Claude Azzopardi and Jean Claude Muscat. Tickets at €15 can be purchased from Telezone (Qormi), Call Zone (Paola) or via email: sanderagius@ gmail.com. All performances start at 20:00 Kris Spiteri
