35 maltatoday, THIS WEEK SUNDAY, 17 NOVEMBER 2013 Flimkien ghal-Ambjent Ahjar holds its annual exhibition FLIMKIEN ghal-Ambjent Ahjar, the heritage and environment NGO will once again be holding its annual art exhibition in November which will feature some of the eminent names from Malta's current art scene including Andrew Diacono, Sina Farrugia, John Grima, C. S. Lawrence, Harold Mallia and Walter Vella. Andrew Diacono is primarily a sculptor, but also a painter of some consequence whose works reproduce the world we live in through spoof and pathos. Sina Farrugia works in various media, with her preferred medium being ceramics. She has also produced many charcoal drawings of great intensity. She has taken part in many collective exhibitions and has also had a number of personal exhibitions both in Malta and internationally. John Grima is a painter, sculptor and designer. He has won several prestigious awards and has had numerous international and local personal exhibitions with works exhibited in various prestigious venues all over the world. Harold Mallia will be exhibiting artifacts modeled from local wood that are created over a period of years wherein the wood is stabilized, treated and sealed months and finally polished using only natural oils and waxes. Caroline Said Lawrence's artwork is produced in a unique combina- tion of mix media collage and focuses mainly on the depiction of facial expressions as well as in local landscapes. Walter Vella is a both a glass artist and also a talented musician, playing New series of cultural tours 2013-14: some of the islands' best-kept secrets THE cultural tours are back: visiting some of the islands' bestkept secrets, this series of tours visits off-the-beaten track locations, offering insight and knowledge into Maltese heritage. Organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, a total of eight tours will run between November 2013 and May 2014. This year a special tour for children aged between eight and 12 years will also be launched. The first in the series of tours will be held on Sunday 24 November and will take participants to Rabat where guides will show participants around the Wignacourt Museum, St Paul's Grotto, St Publius Church, the Second World War Shelters as well as the church and catacombs of St Cataldus. Transport for this tour leaves from opposite the Phoenicia Hotel at 08:45; guides' explanations can be in Maltese as well as in English. Those wishing to attend should fill in an application which can be collected from the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, 230, Republic Street, Valletta by not later than the Wednesday before the respective tour. The European Union Youth Orchestra is auditioning now APPLICATIONS to audition in Malta for the 2014/2015 European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) are now open. Made up of young musicians from all 28 EU countries, the EUYO is considered one of the world's most prestigious orchestras. Organised by The Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, this year's masterclasses and auditions will be held by the EUYO's rehearsal conductor Peter Stark on 15 and 16 December respectively at Robert Samut Hall, Floriana. They will be free of charge. All Maltese musicians of at least Grade 8 standard aged between December 14, 24 and 31, 2013 are encouraged to audition for the orchestra. You could be joining the EUYO for their Summer 2014 and Spring 2015 tours. Since its foundation in 1976, the EUYO has developed into one of the world's most prestigious and dynamic orchestras, providing an exceptional bridge between music colleges and the professional music world for almost 3,000 alumni. Thousands of musicians aged between 14 and 24 from all 28 European Union member states audition annually for a chance to join the Orchestra, and the EUYO's alumni have gone on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras as well as developing careers as soloists, conductors, composers and music teachers. Following the recent entry of Croatia into the EU, the EUYO has welcomed young Croatian musicians for the first time, and now comprises 130 musicians from the EU's 28 member states. The first-ever concert by the EUYO in Malta was held part of the Malta Arts Festival last summer. Last year, Malta's very own Jean Noel Attard and Nadine Galea formed part of the EUYO, with Attard occupying the post of principal second violin. Attard has also recently won the prestigious Aleksandar Pavlovic Award, which is presented annually to the violinist in the Orchestra with the most talent and potential. Glen Zammit and Cecilia Sultana DeMaria were also picked as reserves. The Orchestra's patrons include the Heads of State and Government of the 28 European Union Member States.
