22 maltatoday, WEDNESDAY, 20 NOVEMBER 2013 MOTORSPORTS ASMK Pasta Poiatti Championship continues on Sunday ON Sunday 17th November 'Assocjazzjoni Sport Muturi u Karozzi' organized the 2nd Trials ASMK Pasta Poiatti 2013/14 Championship event in the quarry of Blockrete Ltd at Saghtar l/o Naxxar. Thomas Smith provided the necessary insurance cover. 13 competitors registered for this non-speed event where personal abilities over natural rough terrain are top priority. Class 'A' Damon Bonello riding a GasGas motorcycle excelled over his competitors in the various Sections of riding over medium sized boulders and rocks in the path indicated by red tape. James Zahra riding a Sherco gain a number of penalty points in his first Heats but did his very best as ace Trials rider Robert Caruana on a GasGas built pressure on Zahra. Though Zahra won 2nd place with 33 penalty points to Caruana's 35 points Damon Bonello won his Class A with 16 points. Class B Rowen Bonello riding a GasGas demonstrated an excellent performance by riding his route almost faultlessly. Rowen gained only 9 penalty points throughout the day's competiton. Fredrick Bonello on another GasGas won 2nd place with 17 penalty points while Tony Curmi won 3rd place with 22 points. Next Trials will be held on Sunday 8th December at L-Ahrax quarry L/o Mellieha. The 4th Autocross Championship event will be held on Sunday 24th November at ASMK Race Circuits at Ta Qali. Race track is to include an S-bend prior to the finish line. National Autocross Championship leader Matthew Borg has gained 50 points on his Opel Nova 1400cc. Gordon Johnson driving a Peugeot 106 is 2nd Overall with 46 points. Christian Galea driving a Fiat Ritmo is 3rd with 45 points. Domenic Zammit on an Alfa Sud is leading the Gozo Autocross Championship with 27 points followed by Joseph Agius (16 points) on a Fiesta and Joseph Vella on an- Damon Bonello other Fiesta with 10 points. Christian Galea on a Fiat Ritmo No.2 is leading the Class 'A' Championship with 13 points out of 3 events. Vince Farrugia on a VW Polo, Melo Zammit on a Ford Escort 3 and Patrick Cassar on an Opel Corsa have 9 points each thus all are in 2nd place so far. Class 'B' leader is Andrew Pisani with 16 points and he is in 1st place so far. Josef Grech on a Ford Fiesta, Philip Joe Vella and Josef Abela both on Opel Nova, all won 9 points each so far. These points will be changed following next Sunday's event. Official Practice Sessions for the Autocross drivers are scheduled for next Saturday from 2.00pm till 4.30pm. Entrance to the paddocks is free during these Practice and testing sessions. More information though the official website www. asmk.org.mt WEIGHTLIFTING Weightlifting National Championships LAST Sunday, the Maltese Weightlifting Association hosted its annual National Championships at the Cottonera Sports Complex. This event had a turnout of more then 30 athletes from all ages who have offered a stunning performance for the spectators present. In the cadet section dedicated to athletes who are younger than the age of 13, participants have entertained their watchers with their charming behavior and wonderful techniques. The 30kg category was won by Rylee Borg with a total of 107 points. The 35kg cat. was won by Shardon Cassar with 111 points while the 62 cat. saw on the podium Blake Vassallo who totaled 104 points. In the female section, Alexia Guiga won the 44kg cat. and Amy Zammit the 48kg cat. The second competition was dedicated to youth athletes younger then 15 and 17 years. In the male section: Malcolm Camilleri won the 50 cat. with a 102 points, breaking as well a national record. The 56 category was won by Matthew Grech with a total of 110kg followed by Kirstin Coleiro. In the heavier categories; Keiran Mifsud won the 85kg with a total of 160kg and Owen Bugeja won the 94kg while shattering 4 national records with a total of 162 kg. Both Andy Grech and Kirsten Scerri showed a solid performance although they are still new to the sport. In the female section; the 48 cat. was won by Francesca Mercieca with a total of 54kg, the 53 cat was won by Anthea Camilleri with a total of 63kg and the 63 cat was won by Beatrix Galea with a total of 66kg. Nicole Gatt won the 58 cat with a total of 113kg while breaking 5 national records. On the other hand Ivana Micallef proved her worth when breaking 8 national records in the 69+ category. In the third group dedicated to femal adults Jessica Ghigo won the competition with a total of 155 kg. She was followed by Marilyn Grech, Marion Pullicino and Amanda Cassar. For this compe- Jessica Ghigo tition, Vicky Kerr, an english athlete was invited to compete and obtained a total of 140kg. In the fourth competition the male adults came head to head to stand their ground. The 85 cat was won by Rodmar Pulis with total of 229kg followed by Ryan Agius and Charles Degiorgio. The 94 cat was won by Matthew Muscat Inglott with a total of 241kg followed by Noel Coleiro. The Female overall was won by Jessica Chigo with 186 points, followed by Nicole Gatt (170 pts) and Ivana Micallef respectively (126 pts). The Male overall was won by Rodmar Pulis with a total of 283 pts followed by Matthew Muscat Inglott totalling 276 points and Noel Coleiro with 257 points. Next Friday, Nicole Gatt will be leaving Malta to participate in the Commonwealth Championships in Penang, Malaysia as a preparation for the Youth Olympic Games. She will be accompanied by the President of the Weightlifting Association, Jesmond Caruana. This event couldn't be possible without the help of the Maltese OlympicCommittee and the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation.
