Daphne Caruana Galizia at a PN meeting in February of this year mit Maempel said, referring to MaltaToday's stories on the fuel procurement scandal at Enemalta in February 2013 and the former minister. Balzan turned to Zammit Maempel and informed him that he would do just that. Balzan replied that Caruana Galizia had attempted to pre-empt a story that appeared in l-orizzont, by launching a hysterical attack on Magistrate Consuelo Herrera and himself on her personal blog. The attack was informed by her suspicion that MaltaToday was about to publish details of her infamous domestic argument with her husband, Peter Caruana Galizia. "Herrera is not my friend, but just because of private gossip that took place at her house – and for which I was not even present – Caruana Galizia surmised that MaltaToday would publish details of the argument that her husband reported to the police, and launched a vicious attack on me and Herrera, giving the impression that we were in league with each other. Ironically, that same week Herrera fined me €700 in a libel instituted against me by Labour MP, then deputy leader, Michael Falzon. " Balzan pointed out that it was Her- "She employs a fascist tactic: guilt by association. She attacks people, such as family and friends, to get at them by putting pressure on me with allegations about other people's lives" rera's dinner guest Lou Bondì and his partner, who texted the gossip to Caruana Galizia, who then hit out him and the magistrate. "I was aware of the incident and that her husband had filed a police report after Caruana Galizia threw plates at him… but it was another newspaper that published the story. "She employs a traditional, fascist tactic in her attack: guilt by association. She attacks people, such as family and friends, to get at them by putting pressure on me with allegations about other people's private lives. In my case, she attacked my late wife by surmising that she was 'still warm in her grave' simply because I had a new partner. "She poured scorn over my mother, my sister, friends, my future father-inlaw, and alleged that I was only getting married because my girlfriend was pregnant." Balzan said that the commercial impact of her statements were exacerbated by her allegations that he was being bankrolled by former Nationalist minister John Dalli. "I never received one cent from John Dalli. Dr Roger de Giorgio and I are equal shareholders in Mediatoday." Balzan also said that the MediaToday's journalists were constantly under attack, citing as an example how former Illum editor Julia Farrugia had been subjected to abuse through a systematic attack of her father, who had been investigated in connection with the murder of Raymond Caruana but never prosecuted. "She lied when she said that this company had sought her to write for its newspapers, or that the newspaper does not answer her calls. When the newsroom asked the foreign ministry about the surprise posting of her son, who had no experience in the Maltese foreign service, the question was of course passed on to her and, because of that, she had the gall to phone to shout and complain with Roger de Giorgio." Balzan added that Caruana Galizia's allegation in a blog post, that MaltaToday would be sold to the GWU, was timed in the middle of the election campaign. "She wrote the posting at 1.28 in the morning, when normal people are either fast asleep or doing other things." Balzan said that he had no intention of selling his shares in MaltaToday, and that the only real interest ever expressed in MaltaToday was from The Times. Balzan submitted to the court a set of posts by Caruana Galizia outlining her commentary on MaltaToday. The case is adjourned to the 7 February, 2014, where Balzan will continue with his evidence.
