53 Sport maltatoday, SUNDAY, 22 DECEMBER 2013 MOTORSPORTS Malta Motorsport Federation welcomes the Land Reclamation proposal The Malta Motorsport Federation (MMF) welcomes with satisfaction that a proposal was submitted to the government for the development of a Motorsport Racing Facility as part of the Land Reclamation expression of interest programme. THIS submission is complimenting further what the Federation has been advocating since its establishment that the development of a Road Safety and Motorsport Facility in Malta was a realistic and sustainable project. Along with other proposals that the Federation has received from other investors on existing land, the development of a motorsport facility will help in the growth of the sport, will reduce road accidents, will lessen expanses to our enthusiasts from travelling abroad to practice their sport in a proper safe environment for training and competitions and will accommodate the diverse range of local and international motorsport events. Besides this, the development of a motorsport facility will generate a ripple effect in the local economy by generating more work in particular to the local Small and Medium En- terprises (SMEs) and will be a major contributor in the sport tourism niche market. Motorsport needs investment with a racing facility abiding to international regulations. The government must concretely support all expression of interests for the development of a motorsport facility, being on existing land or reclaimed from sea, as this is the sensible step in the right direction to assist in the ever increasing enthusiasm and potential that Motor Racing can give to this country. The Federation is fully committed to this call, and is ready to assist the government in carrying out the necessary studies in order to attain an acceptable multipurpose motorsport facility inconformity to international safety standards for the benefit of the full motoring community in the Maltese Islands. KICKBOXING Kickboxing: Daniel "the Jet " Zahra wins in Ireland On the 14th of December Daniel "the Jet " Zahra won the K1 World Title in Northern Ireland YING Yang Kickboxing Team Noel went to Northern Ireland to represent Malta in a K1 competition sanctioned by the World Kickboxing Network ( WKN ). The Maltese athletes were Daniel "the Jet " Zahra and Brandon Spiteri with the coach Master Noel Mercieca and manager Isaac Chetcuti. " The Jet " had a 5x3 match with K1 rules against Gary Hamilton, an athlete from Northern Ireland. Hamilton is known to be one of the best athletes in the country and has several international titles. During all the bouts Hamilton began using his former class to help him win. But this was not enough to keep Zahra from attacking and gaining points. "The Jet " knocked down Hamilton four times, once in the first round with a hand technique, twice in the second with knee strikes and once in the third with a knee. Hamilton's coach decided to stop the match at the end of the third round and thus Daniel "the Jet " Zahra kept the WKN World Title Belt in his category . The second athlete from Team Noel was Brandon Spiteri who had a 4x2 match against an athlete from Northern Ireland . He faced Alex Coicoi for the European Amateur Title in his category. Spiteri began attacking con- stantly to keep the pressure on Coicoi but from his part countered a lot and gained points.
